[미디어멤버스]부산문화회관에서 만난 한국판 “로미오와 줄리엣" Korean version of “Romeo and Juliet” at Busan Cultural Center

Last Saturday, I had a chance to watch a unique Korean adaptation of “Romeo and Juliet” at the Busan Cultural Center (부산문화회관).

지난 토요일, 저는 부산문화회관에서 특별한 한국판 “로미오와 줄리엣” 공연을 관람할 기회를 가졌습니다.

The Busan Cultural Center is located in Nam-gu, just a 10-minute walk from 대연역 (Daeyeon Station) on Line 2.

부산문화회관은 남구에 위치해 있으며, 2호선 대연역에서 도보로 10분 거리에 있어 접근성이 뛰어납니다.

​

The building itself blends modern facilities with beautiful traditional Korean architecture, making it a cultural landmark in the city.

현대적인 시설과 한국 전통 건축미가 조화를 이루어 부산의 대표 문화 명소로 손꼽히죠.

The performance I attended wasn’t your typical Shakespearean production.

제가 본 공연은 흔히 떠올리는 셰익스피어 연극과는 달랐습니다.

Instead of veteran actors, the cast featured talented young performers — mostly locals from Busan, Ulsan, and Gyeongnam — selected through open auditions.

베테랑 배우들 대신 부산, 울산, 경남 출신의 청년 배우들이 오디션을 통해 선발되어 무대에 올랐습니다.

​

The goal? To nurture the next generation of artists right here in Busan.

이 공연의 취지는 지역의 젊은 예술가들이 부산에서 경력을 이어갈 수 있도록 돕는 것이었죠.

One of the most impressive aspects was how the actors broke the fourth wall.

가장 인상적이었던 점은 배우들이 관객과의 경계를 허물고 소통한 것이었습니다.

They often came down into the audience, making us feel like part of the story.

It was playful, interactive, and full of surprises — like modern jokes, lively dances, and comedic moments you wouldn’t expect from “Romeo and Juliet.”

배우들이 객석으로 내려와 관객을 이야기 속으로 끌어들였고, 현대적인 유머와 활기찬 춤, 예상치 못한 코믹한 순간들까지 더해져 관람 내내 즐거웠습니다.

The party scene at the start was unforgettable.

초반 파티 장면은 정말 잊을 수 없었습니다.

When the queen declared, “The music is too sad, play something more fun,” the soundtrack switched to upbeat club music.

The hall erupted in laughter, and for a moment, I thought the ladies in gowns might start twerking!

왕비가 “음악이 너무 우울하네, 좀 더 신나는 걸 틀어줘”라고 하자 클럽 음악이 흘러나왔고, 객석은 웃음바다가 되었죠.

잠시 후 드레스 차림의 여인들이 춤이라도 출 것 같았어요.

The set design and costumes were also excellent, adding depth and richness to every scene.

무대 세트와 의상도 훌륭해서 장면마다 몰입감을 더했습니다.

This production ran as part of a cultural initiative to bring fresh energy into Busan’s performing arts scene, giving young talent a chance to shine.

이 공연은 부산 공연예술계에 새로운 활력을 불어넣고 청년 예술가들에게 기회를 주기 위한 문화 프로젝트의 일환으로 진행되었습니다.

All in all, I left the theater with a big smile and a heart full of appreciation.

전체적으로 공연을 보고 난 후 미소와 감사한 마음으로 극장을 나섰습니다.
